Well, that's not entirely true — «Brainiac» had already been around for almost 10 years at that point. However, vintage computers filled entire wall cabinets and could do far less than a pocket calculator.
The fact is, when I started working as an illustrator more than 30 years ago, it was still an almost completely analog profession.

Of course, this has changed over the decades. As in all other areas, digitalization has also found its way into my work. And that was a good thing!
But today? Today, computers — AI — draw the pictures themselves!
So why would anyone even want a hand-drawn illustration anymore? Let alone pay for one?
Perhaps because people prefer images that have been created by other people with their own hands?

Wer mich so anschaut, würde bei meinem blendenden, jugendlichen Aussehen kaum glauben, wie alt ich tatsächlich schon bin.

Na ja, das stimmt zwar nicht ganz - «Brainiac» gab es damals bereits schon seit fast 10 Jahren. Der Vintage-Computer füllte allerdings ganze Wandschränke und konnte weit weniger als ein Taschenrechner.
Tatsache aber ist, als ich vor mehr als 30 Jahren meine Tätigkeit als Illustrator aufnahm, diese noch eine fast komplett analoge war.
Natürlich hat sich dies über die Jahrzehnte geändert – so wie an allen anderen Stellen hat die Digitalisierung auch bei meiner Tätigkeit Einzug gehalten. Und das war gut so!
Doch heute? Heute zeichnet der Computer – die KI – die Bilder gleich selbst!
Weshalb sollte irgend ein Mensch also überhaupt noch eine von Hand gezeichnete Illustration wollen? Geschweige dann bezahlen?
Vielleicht weil Menschen Bilder bevorzugen, die von anderen Menschen mit ihren eigenen Händen geschaffen wurden?
